This question has been asked by many beginning in the late 1980’s.  The Greek word “doula” originally meant “female slave for the childbearing woman”. She was given to woman of child-bearing years.  This slave helped her through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Today a doula is typically a woman supporting another woman through labor and/or during her postpartum.
